Novice IOM: Mediterranean Migrants
Topic Synopsis
There have been 31,178 missing migrants recorded since 2014. Many of these immigrants are seeking a better life, away from the hardships and oppression from their country of origin. Since the mid 1990s there have been thousands of people who cross the Mediterranean Sea to migrate to Europe. However, these migration routes are perilous, resulting in many preventable deaths. One of the top priorities of the International Organization for Migration is the safety and security of these migrants. The death toll is rising rapidly, recently reaching over 3000 at the end of 2023, an all-time high. Delegates will discuss the core issues of the migration crisis and work to mitigate the amount of deaths occurring in the Mediterranean, create sustainable pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, and end this crisis once and for all.
